A Character Truth to Win No.16
You build resilience by taking steps that help you find meaning in tough times, accept responsibility, and give yourself a reason to keep going.
Donald told Arthur that the board wanted to add another track to the conference, even though the event was already too big for the venue. He ended by saying, “I’m sure you will easily adapt the logistics accordingly.”
Arthur quickly realised Donald and the board did not see how serious this change was. He knew the short-handed organising committee would have to manage program changes, adjust the venue and speaker allocation, and increase logistical support. With the start date near, it was crunch time.
On his way home, hoping to spend time with his wife before continuing work, Arthur remembered something his mentor once said: “Remember, no problem is too big to run away from.”
That thought lasted only a moment. Arthur reminded himself why he was organising this conference: to show the world the good work happening across the continent. The board chose him because they believed he could handle it.
With this new focus, Arthur began to see things differently. He considered the best way to handle the expansion. It would be tough but a clear purpose gave him strength to face it.
When things get tough, focus less on problems and more on what you can do to move forward. Think about your bigger purpose and abilities before acting to build positive momentum. Even small steps can prevent a tough situation from worsening.
Next time you feel overwhelmed, take a small positive step to ease the pressure.
